2010 WC Bets Total R1.5 billion
19 July 2010
Bookies who took bets for the FIFA 2010 World Cup are smiling all the way to the bank after raking in an estimated R1.5 billion through punter’s bets during the tournament. Of this mammoth figure, it’s estimated that over R500 million was spent on illegal betting. A further surprising fact that has been revealed is the size of the bets: The average bets on the final ranged between R5,000 and R20,000. Betting during the world cup has outshined that of the other two largest sports betting events in the country: The Super 14 Rugby Tournament (which sees on average R100 million in bets during the tournament) and the Vodacom Durban July (which is taking place soon).
