De Korver Wins EPT
11 April 2009
26 year old Leeuwarden local Pieter de Korver has won the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour in Monte Carlo, besting a field of 935 players to scoop the €2,3million purse. De Korver turned pro two years ago and is a member of Team PokerStars Pro Netherlands. His biggest win prior to the EPT was at the Poker Kampion van Nederland, where he triumphed over a field of 20, 000 players.
Staged over 6 days from the 28th April to 3rd May in Salle des Etoiles, De Korver made a remarkable comeback in the 9 hour final EPT table after winning a series of showdowns when he was on his last two big blinds. When asked about his win, De Korver said “It was amazing. I was loving the atmosphere and just really enjoying playing cards. I had a bit of luck and then I won. That is the best part of Poker.”
The EPT also featured Poker greats such as Daniel Negrenu, Peter Eastgate, Joe Hachem, Greg Raymer, Andy Bloch, Tony G, Andy Black and Chris Moneymaker. Celebrities such as rapper Nelly and tennis legend Boris Becker also took part. The High Roller event was won by Team PokerStars Vanessa Rousso who faced down American Randy Dorfman at the final table. The Ante Up For Africa Event raised over €160, 000 for war torn Darfur and was won by PokerStars Pro Isabelle Mercier.
Bertrand Elky Grospellier was a favourite at the Grand Final as he attempted to play in as many Sit and Go tournaments as possible in one hour. Grospellier played four screens simultaneously and ended his attempt after 62 games, up $23.60.
