PartyGaming vs. the US
13 April 2009
PartyGaming has agreed to pay the US government $105 million in exchange for immunity from prosecution for their online gambling business in the country. Online gambling in the US was made illegal when the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was voted into legislation. Instead of signaling the end of the online gambling industry within the country, the laws vagueness has meant that millions of Americans still gamble online.
PartyGaming shares are expected to spike in light of the news and the US has indicated that if the online gambling laws are changed, the company would be eligible for a license to re-enter the market. The deal will be paid in full by 2012, with PartyGaming having the option of paying the $105 million in eight installments.
