Show Me Your Poker Face
6 April 2009
Poker has become mainstream in South Africa, following Ray Rahme’s third placing at the 2007 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. The industry has blossomed in the two years since then, with fans playing friendly games in suburban lounges, online and in traditional casinos regularly.
CEO of Emperor’s Palace, Bob Yearham, concurs. “Rahme’s third place in 2007 in the World Series caught the attention of many South Africans. Combined with the introduction of Poker coverage on television, we now have enormous interest in the game in South Africa.”
Poker remains a niche market within the casino industry and although it accounts for only 1% of most casinos’ overall revenue, it is growing. Tsogo Sun and Sun International have also added more Poker tables to their casino floors in a bid to cash in on this burgeoning trend.
The game of Poker has lost its seedy, back room reputation and has emerged as a sophisticated, respectable and slick form of entertainment. Newly appointed Bluff Magazine editor, Ryan Dreyer, comments that interest in the game keep surging to new levels. What makes Poker so popular it seems is that it is a game that combines skill, a degree of math and a flair for deception.
