The online gambling industry is anteing up for Haiti
20 January 2010
One of the industry's leaders, Bodog founder Calvin Ayre, ordered his foundation to donate GBP 10,000 to the earthquake relief effort and offered to match anyone involved in online gambling's pledge of up to $1 million.
''It is a disaster in Haiti. I know they have had a tough go from Mother Nature recently, hurricanes and now this earthquake. I cannot help but be disgusted with the ruling elite that has driven this country down like this while, no doubt, filling their own pockets," Ayre wrote on his blog.
''That all said, the innocents as always are paying a horrendous price for this elite thievery, and I think the global online gaming community has a duty to do something.''
Ayre added that the rapid growth of the online gambling industry worldwide has created wealth among companies involved in it and they all have an obligation to give back. He said he has faith that the online gambling industry will respond in Haiti's time of crisis.
