Poker Chips Now Lead Free
23 February 2009
by Kiara Miller
Poker chips have always contained a small amount of lead, which is a known toxic chemical. This may change soon as an Oakland company has signed an agreement with one of the major chip manufacturers, GPIC, to remove the carcinogenic metal from their chips. The American Centre for Environmental Health has argued long and hard against the use of lead in Poker chips, saying that dealers and players are exposed to the dangerous metal on a daily basis, leading to long term health problems. Gaming Partners International Corp makes chips for 28 of the 30 biggest casinos in the US and has undertaken to reduce the amount of lead in their chips from 47% to just 0.005%. Casinos will also have to post warning signs advising patrons and dealers to regularly wash their hands after being exposed to chips on the casino floor
